West Virginia Quietly Becomes Fourth State to Launch Sports Betting

Casino News Daily
West Virginia Quietly Becomes Fourth State to Launch Sports Betting

West Virginia quietly became the fourth state to launch legal sports betting after the US Supreme Court struck down in May a federal ban on wagering on professional and collegiate sports leagues.

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in Charles Town, West Virginia accepted yesterday its first bet, thus soft-opening its sportsbook. The casino’s wagering facility is operated by the US division of British bookmaker William Hill.

House Delegate Jason Barrett put the first bet on Thursday to participate in a historic moment for the state’s and the US gambling industry. Delegate Barrett placed $50 on the West Virginia Mountaineers to win the football national championship. He will win nearly $3,000 if that happens. The state lawmaker told local media that it was extremely easy to bet and that it really reminded him of betting on horse racing.

The General Managing Counsel of the West Virginia Lottery, Danielle Boyd, has confirmed the opening of the state’s first sportsbook and has pointed out that the despite the facility’s grand opening on Saturday, it is “officially open” now.

Hollywood Casino, which is owned and operated by Penn National Gaming Inc., will host a larger-scale opening ceremony for its sportsbook tomorrow at 11 am local time. A mobile app that will allow the casino’s patrons to wager while at the property via their mobile phones is expected to be rolled out in the next couple of weeks.

Commenting on the launch of their sportsbook, Hollywood Casino Head of Sports Erich Zimny told local media on Thursday that they are happy that West Virginia has jumped on the betting bandwagon quickly and has thus secured a competitive edge over neighboring Maryland.

A bill allowing sports betting at Maryland’s gambling venues was introduced last year but was voted down by legislators. It is believed that it will be reintroduced next spring. If it gains the necessary support in the state Legislature, it will then have to survive a statewide referendum in order to be enacted.

Exemplary Regulatory Framework

West Virginia was actually among the states that passed a legislative framework ahead of the US Supreme Court ruling in May that allowed individual states to legalize sports betting, if they felt inclined to do so. This facilitated the early launch of sports betting services at the state’s existing gambling facilities.

Commenting on the state’s wagering regulatory framework, Delegate Barrett said that it should be model for the rest of the nation and that he believes they have done it right.

According to preliminary estimates by the West Virginia Legislature, the state’s sports betting industry would contribute additional revenue of around $5.5 million to the coffers during the first year. However, a separate, Lottery-commissioned study presented a much more optimistic picture for additional revenue of between $9 million and $17 million.

Five of the state’s casinos have lodged interest in operating sportsbooks. They were all required to pay a $100,000 licensing fee. In addition, they will have to contribute a 10% tax on adjusted gross sports wagering receipts.

Nayong Pilipino Foundation Slams Corruption Allegations over Casino Project

Casino News Daily
Nayong Pilipino Foundation Slams Corruption Allegations over Casino Project

Nayong Pilipino Foundation officials once again denied corruption allegations and stressed on the legality of the foundation’s deal with Hong Kong casino resort developer Landing International Development that secured the latter with a land plot for the development of a $1.5-billion hotel and casino complex.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte fired earlier this month all members of the board of the state-run organization that was established back in the 1970s to run the Nayong Pilipino cultural theme park located in Pasay City in the Metro Manila area.

Earlier this year, Nayong Pilipino Foundation penned an agreement with Landing to lease the land previously occupied by the above-mentioned theme park for the development of an integrated resort with a casino floor, hotels, and multiple non-gambling entertainment options. The site is located within Entertainment City in the Manila Bay area and not far from where the Philippine capital’s three operational integrated resorts have been built.

The Hong Kong-based developer broke ground on the property earlier this month. However, President Duterte announced hours after the ground-breaking ceremony that measures will be taken to block the materialization of the mega-plan.

The Philippines’ top official said that the lease deal was flawed and “grossly disadvantageous” as the lease period was “ridiculously long” and the lease rates were too low. In addition, the members of the Nayong Pilipino Foundation were accused of corruption.

President Duterte also ordered the Department of Justice to carry out a review of the lease deal. DOJ officials announced earlier today that the probe was completed on Wednesday but refused to reveal more details about the department’s findings.

Nayong Pilipino Foundation Slams Corruption, Graft Allegations

In a written statement released across several local news outlets on Wednesday, the foundation said that it has followed “all procedural and legal requirements” before the project was launched and that its members were “falsely and maliciously accused” of corruption.

Under the terms of the deal between Nayong Pilipino Foundation and Landing, the latter agreed to lease the portion of land for a period of 25 years with an option for an extension of the deal for another 25 years. In his comments against the deal, President Duterte has pointed out that it was a ridiculously long one and granted Landing permission to use the land for a period of 70 years and operate a casino on it. And the official has repeatedly pointed out that no other casinos beyond the existing ones would be allowed in the country.

The foundation stressed that a 70-year lease period has never been discussed by the two parties and that the initial lease period could only be extended to 50 years if the Philippine Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority classifies Landing’s development as a tourism project.

As for President Duterte’s comments that the lease price was too low, the foundation said that Landing has agreed to pay PHP360 per square meter per month for the 9.57-hectare property and to contribute 10% of the net profits from the three theme parks that are planned to be developed as part of the integrated resort, which effectively raises the lease price to PHP570 per square meter per month. The foundation’s statement further read that Resorts World Manila pays PHP156.66 per square meter per month for the 5.4-hectare site it occupies, a price significantly lower than what Landing has agreed to pay.

Michael Copeland Takes Down WPT500 Los Angeles for $181,950

Casino News Daily
Michael Copeland Takes Down WPT500 Los Angeles for $181,950

The 2018 edition of the WPT500 Los Angeles is now in the books. The tournament drew 2,509 entries who challenged their luck and tested their skills against each other at one of California’s hottest poker destinations – The Bicycle Casino. In the end, it was Michael Copeland who posed for a celebratory picture and then pocketed the first-place prize of $181,950 for outlasting his many opponents.

The final day of the tournament was played on Monday at the host casino. Nine players returned to play the final table and determine the champion. And Copeland led them into that final stage of the game with a massive chip lead.

It was a relatively short day at The Bike. The final table took less than four hours for the start-of-the-day field of nine to be whittled down to the champion. The first elimination occurred half an hour into action when Alexander Beleson’s [Ac][Qs] ran into Jorge Pineda’s pocket aces. An ace on the flopped pretty much sealed it for Pineda, while Beleson hit the rail for $17,790.

Players walked out one after another until there were just two players left at the table. More about the heads-up duel shortly. It is first important to note that Copeland entered the final day of the WPT500 as the chip leader with a massive advantage over the rest in contention with his stack of 19 million. And he never really lost momentum throughout the day.

The eventual champion was the first and only one to pass the 30 million chip mark yesterday. That happened during three-handed play. At that point, he was in possession of half of all chips in play.

Heads-Up

Copeland faced Pineda heads-up. The eventual winner had nearly three times more chips than his final opponent at the time cards were thrown in the air for the two-handed match. And it was not a long battle. It actually took around ten minutes for Copeland to finish off his last opponent.

On what turned out to be the final hand of the tournament, Pineda shoved pre-flop for 10.125 million and Copeland called. The eventual winner flipped over [Ac][Jc] to Pineda’s [10c][9h]. The board ran out [Ad][10s][8c][8s][4s] to bring the tournament to an end. Pineda hit the rail in second place, good for a cash prize of $120,610.

The WPT500 Los Angeles was the second event of the WPT500 series to take place this year, which means that it closed the popular WPT brand’s fifth season. The event featured a record number of starting flights – 16 overall. As mentioned earlier, it attracted a little over 2,509 entries who paid a buy-in fee of $570 to generate a prize pool of $1,254,500. Each of the nine players who played the final table was guaranteed a minimum cash of $17,790. And the winner scooped a first-place prize of $181,950, the WPT500 champion’s trophy and another trophy from the host casino.

Kentucky Lawmakers Look to Take Small But Very Precise Steps on Sports Betting Legalization

Casino News Daily
Kentucky Lawmakers Look to Take Small But Very Precise Steps on Sports Betting Legalization

It has been three months since the US Supreme Court struck down the 1992 nationwide ban on sports betting. The historic ruling led up to the legalization and launch of sports betting offering in several states and started discussions over the potential of a regulated sports betting industry in multiple other states.

Delaware, New Jersey, and Mississippi were the first to roll out wagering products, while West Virginia and Rhode Island are gearing up for the launch such offering in a regulated environment. Interest in sports betting has also been picking up in Pennsylvania, where two of the state’s 12 casinos have applied for permission to offer such products to its customers. The regulation of sports betting in the Keystone State comes as part of a sweeping gambling expansion process that will also see the provision of online gaming services to residents.

And while the above states decided to jump on the legal wagering bandwagon very shortly after the long-running ban was lifted, Kentucky lawmakers have taken a more cautious approach.

Three sports betting bills have been introduced in the state Legislature so far, but all three are yet to pass a committee vote. It can be said that former Kentucky Governor and current Senator Julian Carroll is leading the sports betting drive in the Bluegrass State. The legislator submitted a bill on the legalization of sports betting in the state in June.

He is also part of a nine-member working group that was assembled shortly after the SCOTUS ruling and vested with the responsible task to create a feasible sports betting regulatory system that will be discussed more broadly in the state Legislature during the next legislative session. With that said, Kentuckians will clearly have to wait at least until next year to be able to wager on professional and amateur leagues.

The nine-member working group, comprised by both Senators and House Representatives and members of both parties, has had two meetings so far. And according to a report from Sports Handle, the second meeting saw two important decisions being made – taxation of regulated sports betting operations and integrity fee for professional sports leagues.

Tax on Net Revenue

In an email to Sports Handle, Sen. Carroll has said that the group has decided on the basis for taxation when and if sports betting is legalized in the state. Wagering will thus be taxed on net revenue, but a rate is yet to be determined by lawmakers.

The taxation decision represents a major diversion from Sen. Carroll’s bill from June this year. The lawmakers called for taxing sports betting on handle. The proposed structure mirrored how pari-mutuel wagering, which has been legal in Kentucky for some time now, was taxed, the lawmaker explained in previous comments on the piece of legislation.

However, it can be said that net revenue is globally recognized by gambling companies serving regulated markets as the most reasonable basis. In other words, taxing sports betting on handle could have affected Kentucky’s lure to major sports betting companies. And it is believed that the state could be really attractive to global gambling giants, particularly when bearing in mind its rich horse racing heritage.

No Integrity Fee

With sports betting growing into an almost nationwide mainstream venture, more and more parties are becoming aware that what could turn into an industry worth hundreds of billions of dollars is currently in the making. And more and more parties want a piece of that large and juicy pie.

The US professional sports leagues have become particularly vocal about their right to benefit from the legalization and regulation of sports betting. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has been among the staunchest supporters of the idea that the NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB deserve to receive a cut of the profit. In June comments, Mr. Silver said that the NBA alone will spend more than $7.5 billion on preparing the upcoming basketball season. And given the fact that that product will be used by casinos, betting halls, and other facilities to generate a profit, they feel they should receive an integrity fee just as musicians receive a royalty for their music that is being streamed all around.

During their latest meeting, the nine members of Kentucky’s sports betting legalization working group have decided that the state’s law on the matter would not include the distribution of an integrity fee to the nation’s professional sports leagues. It is also important to note that the six states that have legalized sports betting so far have not introduced an integrity fee as part of their regulation effort.

What Is Next for Kentucky’s Sports Betting Regulation Effort?

The nine lawmakers tasked with crafting the state’s sports betting regulatory framework have quite some work to do. For instance, they will have to decide where sports betting will be offered and who will regulate the industry.

Kentucky does not have commercial Las Vegas-style casinos. On the other hand, the state is home to nine racetracks, including the extremely popular Churchill Downs which annually hosts the Kentucky Derby. Under Sen. Carrol’s bill, sports betting will be allowed across the state’s horse racing venues.

Under a bill filed in the House of Representatives, the state lottery will regulate the provision of sports betting in Kentucky and sports betting products will be offered across retail lottery outlets, in addition to the nine racetracks.

Tax revenue distribution is another important matter that will have to be decided upon. The Senate bill looks to close a very huge and important gap and focuses on the state’s cash-strapped pension systems. It is yet to be seen whether that proposal will make it to the final draft of Kentucky’s sports betting legislation.

Sen. Carroll has said in his e-mail to Sports Handle that their most important goal is to protect Kentucky’s citizens, despite the potentially huge revenue source that will be created with the legalization and roll-out of a regulated sports betting product.

Galaxy Chairman Expresses Strong Confidence in Boracay Casino Plan

Casino News Daily
Galaxy Chairman Expresses Strong Confidence in Boracay Casino Plan

Chinese casino tycoon Lui Che Woo is confident that Galaxy Entertainment Group will build a $500-million integrated resort with a gaming floor on the Philippine island of Boracay, despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s apparent disdain for casinos.

Mr. Lui shared details about the Macau-based gaming and hospitality giant’s Boracay venture as well as about its Japan expansion plans in an interview for CNBC that was broadcast earlier today on the news network’s Squawk Box Asia program.

Late last year, Galaxy revealed plans for the development of a $500-million destination resort on Boracay together with its Philippine partner Leisure & Resorts World Corp. Early in 2018, the two companies secured a provisional license from PAGCOR and a 23-hectare land plot on the island. However, the casino portion of the project quickly fell victim to President Duterte’s anti-gambling rhetoric. In addition, Boracay was closed for at the end of April for a six-month environmental cleanup, which was, too, ordered by the Philippines’ top official.

President Duterte has said multiple times over the past several months that he would not allow the construction of a new casino resort on the island once it reopens for business at the end of October. However, developers have maintained that the project will eventually materialize and that they will look to meet all environmental and other requirements the government might place.

Focus on Non-Gaming Options

In his CNBC interview, Mr. Lui said that their Boracay resort will target high-end customers from the Asia-Pacific region. However, there will be a clear focus on non-gambling offering. The casino floor will thus represent a small portion of the whole complex and will only feature several dozens of gaming tables. The businessman went on to say that it will be their goal to “restore the beautiful natural scenery” of Boracay to how it had been before.

Mr. Lui also pointed out that they are very confident in the project’s realization and that they will remain firm on their plans, unless the Philippine government decides otherwise.

The Chinese mogul was also asked about Galaxy’s plans for expansion in Japan. Mr. Lui said that they are watching closely developments in Japan and that they certainly nurture big ambitions for that market. Japan legalized casino gambling not long ago and a number of major gaming and hospitality companies have lodged interest in bidding for one of three gaming licenses that are to be issued.

Mr. Lui pointed out that they will pursue one of these gaming licenses, but non-gambling entertainment will be what they will really focus on if they are allowed to operate in Japan. The businessman said that they are working with the Monte Carlo brand in Macau and have recently acquired a small stake in the Macau branch of Wynn Resorts, and that they will use these partnerships to boost their chances for entering the Japanese market. The company has also been looking for Japanese partners, but the casino mogul said it would not be appropriate to reveal any potential partnerships at this point.

Casino News Daily
Dustin Gottstein Emerges as WPT500 Los Angeles Overall Chip Leader

Saturday was an eventful day at The Bicycle Casino in the Los Angeles area as the ongoing WPT500 Los Angeles finally concluded its starting flights stage. Over the course of the past eight days, as many as 2,509 entrants paid the $570 buy-in fee to try their luck and challenge their skills in one of WPT’s most exclusive series.

Of the original field, only 124 will progress into Day 2 action which starts today at 1 pm local time. Action will kick off from Level 19, the earliest finish of all 16 starting flights, with blinds standing at 4,000/8,000.

Day 1O of the tournament was played yesterday at The Bike. It was the largest one of all starting flights, drawing 460 players. There were only 23 finalists left at the end of the day. They will advance into Day 2 led by Dustin Gottstein who bagged the largest stack last night. The player collected 1.334 million in chips.

It is important to note that this was not only Day 1O’s biggest chip stack, but also the biggest one bagged throughout all sixteen starting flights. In other words, Gottstein has finally replaced Day 1A chip leader Peter Hengsakul at the top of the overall chip counts chart.

Day 1P Recap

Day 1P (Turbo) was the event’s final starting flight. It was, too, played yesterday at The Bike. The flight attracted 189 entries who were eventually whittled down to just nine players. Paul Lee bagged the largest stack of that closing starting flight. The player will enter Day 2 with 830,000 worth of chips.

As mentioned above, Gottstein will begin Day 2 as the overall chip leader with 1.334 million, followed by Day 1A’s Hengsakul with 1.151 million. It is interesting to note that Hengsakul is looking to improve his third-place finish in the previous edition of the WPT500 Los Angeles. The tournament was played at The Gardens Casino last May. Hengsakul made it to the podium, but could only claim the bronze and a third-place prize of $100,000.

Alexander Beleson, the Day 1G chip leader, will enter Day 2 action with the third largest chip stack of all 124 remaining hopefuls with 1.114 million. And Thomas Zanot is the last player to have passed the one million mark. Zanot was the Day 1I chip leader and bagged 1.1 million at the end of that starting flight.

The 2,509-strong field of the WPT500 Los Angeles created a prize pool of $1,254,500, easily crushing the $1-million guarantee. It is yet to be announced how much the winner will be awarded.

Day 2 of the tournament is set for a 1 pm start at The Bike, known to be one of California’s hottest poker destinations. The remaining hopefuls will be contending for a spot among the final nine. The nine finalists will then return to the host casino on Monday to play down to a champion.

Las Vegas Judge Throws Out Steve Wynn Defamation Case against The Associated Press

Casino News Daily
Las Vegas Judge Throws Out Steve Wynn Defamation Case against The Associated Press

A Nevada judge has recently dismissed a defamation case lodged by disgraced casino tycoon Steve Wynn against The Associated Press and an AP reporter. It was in April when Mr. Wynn’s legal team filed a complaint against the news agency over a report published in February about two women’s accounts to police accusing the businessman of sexual misconduct.

Mr. Wynn’s legal representatives said in a 13-page complaint that the AP had produced a news story based on police accounts of a woman who had previously falsely accused the casino mogul of rape. The filing went on that the AP should have included additional information about those previous allegations so that readers be able to reach their own conclusions and not be influenced by the limited information in the published article.

Mr. Wynn’s legal complaint referred to Halina Kuta, who told police in February that she had been raped by the businessman back in the 1970s and had given birth to a daughter in the restroom of a gas station. Ms. Kuta also said that she had been married to Mr. Wynn and had given birth to other children. However, she told police that she could not recount all their names and birth dates. The disgraced businessman’s legal team pointed out that discrepancies contained in Ms. Kuta’s account raised questions.

Judge Throws Out Mr. Wynn’s Defamation Case

In a recent written order, Judge Ronald Israel from the Clark County District Court ruled that the Associated Press’ reporting on the two sexual misconduct police reports was fair and no additional information could have been provided about any of the two women at the time because their names were blacked out in police documents obtained by the news agency and its reporter under a public records request.

Mr. Wynn’s attorney, L. Lyn Wood told media on Friday that they will appeal the ruling in the Nevada Supreme Court.

The disgraced businessman is facing multiple sexual misconduct allegations, mostly from former and current employees of gaming and hospitality giant Wynn Resorts, which he himself founded. First news about Mr. Wynn’s alleged lengthy pattern of sexual harassment emerged in January when the Wall Street Journal published a report detailing multiple cases of the casino mogul subjecting women to unwanted advances of sexual nature.

There are ongoing probes over the allegations, which Mr. Wynn has been denying fervently. Following the publication of the WSJ report, the businessman left his posts as CEO and Chairman of Wynn Resorts and had to leave his residence at one of the company’s properties in Las Vegas.

The allegations against Mr. Wynn and the scope to which Wynn Resorts was aware or if it had any actual knowledge about the alleged sexual misconduct incidents are being investigated by the gaming regulators of the jurisdictions where the company operates or is planning to operate casinos, including Nevada, Macau, and Massachusetts.

Gambling Watchdog Slaps Six-Figure Fine on Netherlands-Facing Betsson Subsidiary

The Dutch gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit, has slapped a hefty fine on a Betsson subsidiary for serving Dutch players without holding the necessary permission, the Malta-headquartered online gambling operator revealed in a press release from earlier today.

Betsson said that its subsidiary Corona Ltd. has been fined €300,000 by the Dutch gaming authority for targeting Netherlands-based customers. This has not been the first time Kansspelautoriteit has imposed a six-figure fine on an erring operator.

Betsson purchased Corona back in 2014 for the total amount of €100 million in anticipation for the re-regulation of the Dutch online gambling market. The company’s subsidiary owns the Oranje Casino and Kroon Casino brands which serve specifically Dutch customers.

Several other Betsson-owned online gambling entities had, too, been under investigation, it became known, but Kansspelautoriteit had ruled that those had not violated its rules. The major operator said in its press release from earlier today that discussions are being held whether they should appeal the Dutch gambling regulator’s recent actions.

Local gaming news outlet GamingInHolland noted in an article on the topic that if the penalty is not voided on appeal, Betsson’s erring subsidiary might not be found eligible to be granted a gaming license when the Netherlands finally re-regulates its market, under the most recent interpretation of the proposed amendments to the nation’s Betting and Gaming Act.

The re-regulation of the Dutch gambling market has proved to be a slow and lengthy process. New regulations, ones that would create a licensing system and would allow international companies to operate in a regulated environment, was originally expected in 2015. It is also important to note that it has been more than a decade now when European authorities first urged the Netherlands to adopt a more progressive approach towards remote gambling.

Following years of discussions and stalled progress, the Dutch Lower House passed the so-called Remote Gambling Bill in the summer of 2016. It was then up to the Senate to vote through the legislative piece. However, the upper chamber of the nation’s government is yet to take that necessary step. According to various reports, lawmakers will be targeting mid-2019 or early 2020 re-regulation of the market.

Betsson has long been one of the heaviest critics of the Netherlands’ slow progress towards adopting a new, modern regulatory framework. The company has also been repeatedly slamming Kansspelautoriteit for its approaches toward curbing the provision of unregulated online gambling services.

Last summer, Betsson called on EU regulators to interfere and prevent the Dutch gaming regulator from penalizing its Dutch-targeting brands. The company argued that Kansspelautoriteit had no authority to take enforcement actions against unlicensed gambling operators.

Betsson also filed a legal challenge in the Hague last year. However, the court sided with Kansspelautoriteit and struck down the operator’s claim.

While the regulator has slapped a number of hefty fines on operators targeting Dutch players over the years, it has faced difficulties in collecting those. It should also be noted that Betsson’s €300,000 penalty has not been the largest one ever imposed by the watchdog. Earlier this year, German gambling operator bet-at-home drew ire for trying to lure customers from the Netherlands and was fined €400,000 by Kansspelautoriteit.

Global Casino Giants Lodge Interest in Athens Integrated Resort Mega-Scheme

Casino News Daily
Global Casino Giants Lodge Interest in Athens Integrated Resort Mega-Scheme

Five casino giants have expressed interest in building a casino resort at the site of the former Ellinikon International Airport near Athens, Greece, the Hellenic Gaming Commission has revealed.

The companies that have lodged initial interest in the mega-scheme are Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, Caesars Entertainment, Las Vegas Sands, Hard Rock International, and Melco Resorts & Entertainment. All five have participated in pre-tender consultations with possible investors held by the Greek gaming regulator. More meetings are planned to take place between the commission and representatives of the five companies as well as other potential investors.

Local news outlet Kathimerini reported that the meetings aim to brief possible license applicants about the terms and demands of the upcoming bidding process. The consultation period will run through September 10 and the Hellenic Gaming Commission will launch a call for bids shortly after.

The start of the bidding process will finally take place after a long delay. The gaming regulator was originally expected to begin accepting applications for the major project last spring, but hurdles of bureaucratic and other nature have hampered the launch of the process.

The commission has told local news outlets recently that it would not go forward with the tender before it secures important details such as the maximum competition, price, and investor credibility.

Integrated Resort Plan

The winning bidder will be part of a grand scheme for the development of a 600,000-square-meter integrated resort that will include a number of hotels, convention, exhibition, and meeting facilities, different themed attractions and other entertainment venues, retail space, and multiple food and beverage facilities.

The gaming portion of the resort will involve the establishment of a 15,000-square-meter casino which the Hellenic Gaming Commission believes will turn into an essential element for the success of the whole mega-project. The casino facility will include an 8,000-square-foot gaming floor as well as some non-gaming facilities that will occupy the remaining portion of its total area.

The winning casino investor will be awarded a 30-year gaming license from the Greek gaming regulator. As mentioned above, the gaming facility will be part of a large resort, the development of which is expected to create 10,000 temporary construction jobs and over 70,000 direct and indirect jobs during the complex’s first five years of operation.

It is important to note that Caesars was probably the first major developer to have expressed interest into Greece’s integrated resort expansion drive. First reports about the company eying the sunny Greek coast emerged last year.

Another important thing to take into account is that Melco is already developing a €500-million resort in the Republic of Cyprus, while Hard Rock was recently announced as the winning bidder for a €1-billion development in Spain, so it is yet to be seen whether any of the two companies would be ready to pledge to another major investment in the region.

WPT500 Los Angeles Days 1G and 1H End with Alexander Beleson and Aram Bedrosian Leading

Casino News Daily
WPT500 Los Angeles Days 1G and 1H End with Alexander Beleson and Aram Bedrosian Leading

Two more starting flights of the WPT500 Los Angeles are in the books now. Days 1G and 1H were played at the host facility, The Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California to see the event’s overall field grow to 955 entries from a field of 764 contestants that was recorded after the two previous starting flights.

Day 1G drew 144 entrants. It kicked off at 11:30 am at the host venue and continued all the way through Level 21. Only seven players made it through the end. They will be led by Alexander Beleson into Day 2, which is set to be played on Sunday, August 26. Beleson accumulated a stack of 1.114 million to put into his bag at the end of the day. The player is thus ranking second in the temporary leaderboard of all starting flights played so far.

He is only topped by Peter Hengsakul, the Day 1A chip leader whose stack of 1.151 million is yet to be bested. Hengsakul is looking to improve his third-place finish from the previous WPT500 Los Angeles, so it is no surprise that he fought fiercely throughout his starting flight.

How Day 1H Unfolded

Day 1H Turbo began at 5 pm at the host venue. Action unfolded over 21 levels. There were 47 players to register into the event through that starting field, but there were only two of them to make it through the very end of the ordeal.

Aram Bedrosian ended the day as the chip leader with 728,000 chips in his bag and a massive advantage over the other survivor, Serj Markarian. The latter player collected 212,000 at the end of the Day 1H starting flight.

As mentioned above, the $570 buy-in WPT500 Los Angeles tournament has attracted a field of 955 entries to far. And that original field has been cut to just 48 hopefuls who will advance into Day 2 on Sunday.

Eight more starting flights are to be played as part of the event’s schedule with the last two of these slated for Saturday, August 25. Each of the next four days, today included, will feature two starting flights, one beginning at 11:30 am local time, the other at 5 pm local time. The second flight of the day would be of turbo format for heated live poker action.

The previous WPT500 Los Angeles event took place in May 2017. The Gardens Casino in Hawaiian Gardens played host to the tournament back then. There were 3,266 entrants to register to create a prize pool of $1.633 million. The top 263 players received a share of the money and it was Dong Le who emerged as the victor to claim the title and the first-place prize of $224,500. As mentioned above, the overall chip leader in the ongoing WPT500 Los Angeles, Peter Hengsakul, finished third in last year’s edition of the tournament to collect $100,000 in prize money.

Budd Beaman and Straton Wilhelm Emerge as WPT500 Los Angeles Days 1E and 1F Chip Leaders

Casino News Daily
Budd Beaman and Straton Wilhelm Emerge as WPT500 Los Angeles Days 1E and 1F Chip Leaders

The fifth and sixth starting flights of the WPT500 Los Angeles were completed on Monday at the host venue, the Bicycle Casino. Days 1E and 1F brought the field of the brand-new edition of the popular event to a total of 764 entries. And the survivors from these two starting flights will be able to join their fellow competitors from the previous few days to progress all together into Day 2 of the $570 buy-in tournament.

Day 1E kicked off at 11 am local time at the hosting casino. It drew a 105-strong field, but there were only five survivors left when organizers called it a day. Budd Beaman ended the day as the chip leader with a stack of 647,000. A look at the player’s Hendon Mob profile shows that he has a little over $8,200 in live tournament earnings, but if he keeps his momentum into the upcoming days of the WPT500 Los Angeles, he might change that and at a hefty payout to his bankroll.

Erik Nason with 574,000, Marc Robinson with 398,000, William Wolf with 292,000, and Ilya Shpiner with 190,000 were the other four players to make it through Day 1E. They will all return to the host venue on Sunday, August 26, for Day 2 action.

The Day 1F Survivors

Day 1F featured a Turbo structure. It kicked off at 5 pm at the host venue to create a field of 51 entries. There were just three players left at the end of that sixth starting flight. Straton Wilhelm was the player to bag and tag the largest chip stack of Day 1F with 522,000. The player finished the day with a considerable chip advantage over his two other fellow competitors. Abdulaziz Alaquil with 264,000 and Thuy Nguyen with 235,000 were the other two to bag for the night.

The WPT500 Los Angeles has attracted a total of 764 entries over the course of its first six starting flights and that original field has been reduced to just 39 hopefuls.

There are ten more starting flights set to be played within the tournament, two on each of the next five days through Sunday, when Day 2 will take place and survivors from all starting days will gather together for the very first time. Sunday action will involve the hopefuls reducing the field to the final nine. The official final table of the tournament will thus be played on Monday when a winner will be determined.

The event features a guaranteed prize pool of $1 million. The guarantee is yet to be crashed but there is still plenty of time for that to happen with the unlimited opportunities for an entry into the tournament.

The Day 1A chip leader Peter Hengsakul is actually holding the overall chip lead among the 39 remaining players. The player bagged and tagged 1.151 million at the end of his respective starting day to top the temporary chip counts chart with a significant advantage. The WPT 500 Los Angeles is not an unknown field for the poker professional. Last year, he finished third in the tournament for a monetary prize of $100,000.
