China lottery sales up 12 pct in November

Mainland China’s total November sales from official lottery products increased by 11.8 percent year-on-year to approximately CNY38.56 billion (US$5.89 billion), according to official data from the country’s Ministry of Finance.

Welfare lottery sales totalled CNY19.40 billion last month, up by 8.6 percent from the prior-year period, while sports lottery sales increased by 15.2 percent year-on-year to CNY19.15 billion.

In November, sales were up in 27 of the 31 provinces and cities of mainland China authorised to sell lottery tickets. Total lottery sales in Beijing declined by 8.0 percent year-on-year in November, according to the ministry’s data. In Guangdong province, sales of lottery tickets grew by 11.5 percent year-on-year to CNY3.92 billion.

Combined sales for the two lottery systems during the first 11 months of 2017 amounted to CNY386.99 billion, a year-on-year increase of 8.1 percent. Welfare lottery sales increased by 5.3 percent to reach about CNY196.33 billion, while sales of sports lottery products rose by 11.1 percent to CNY190.66 billion.

Guangdong remained mainland China’s biggest single-province market for lottery products in the first 11 months of 2017, with total lottery ticket sales reaching CNY38.26 billion in the period, up by 6.5 percent from a year earlier. Guangdong was followed by Jiangsu province, where total lottery ticket sales were CNY31.51 billion, up by 7.1 percent year-on-year.

Shandong province in eastern China placed third, with lottery ticket sales of nearly CNY30.37 billion in the 11 months to November 30, an increase of 4.6 percent from a year earlier, according to official data.
