MGM Resorts International has recently moved into its new corporate offices in Springfield, Massachusetts, where it is currently building the $950-million MGM Springfield casino resort. The move comes as another indication that the major casino operator is well on schedule to complete and launch the multi-purpose complex this September.
MGM Resorts’ Springfield corporate offices occupy an 11-story building, known to locals as the MassMutual building. As many as 300 executives and administrative employees are expected to move in the new offices; around 50 have already moved in, local media reports.
Located at 95 State Street in the central part of Springfield, the building that accommodates the operator’s new offices was originally constructed in 1929. MGM Resorts had to renovate certain aspects, including plumbing, electricity, and other fixtures, before being able to move in. However, the operator has preserved the building’s original facade.
Casino News Daily reported recently that MGM Resorts has commenced searching for employees for its new casino resort. Back in November, the company opened a career center in downtown Springfield.
The Las Vegas casino giant has previously promised that 35% of all 3,000 employees at the resort will be from Springfield and 90% will be from the city and the region. Talking to local media, MGM Springfield President and COO, has recently reiterated the company’s commitment to employ workforce from the host community. It has also become known that training for casino employees is set to begin anytime now.
Why Is MGM Springfield Important for Massachusetts’ Casino Industry?
The $950-million will actually be the state’s first full-fledged Las Vegas-style casino, after Massachusetts lawmakers authorized commercial casino gambling back in 2013. The resort was originally expected to open doors a bit earlier, but design changes and construction works at the nearby Interstate 91, which are expected to be finished in August, delayed its eventual launch. MGM Resorts eventually decided to cut the ribbon on its latest property in September 2018.
The whole resort will occupy 2 million square feet across three downtown Springfield blocks. It will feature a 125,000-square-foot casino with a number of slot machines and gaming tables, including 23 poker tables, a six-story, 250-room boutique hotel, a six-screen movie theater, and a number of other entertainment and food and beverage facilities.
Another integrated resort is set to open doors in Massachusetts next year. Las Vegas operator Wynn Resorts is currently building a $2-plus-billion hotel and casino complex along the Mystic River in Everett. The resort is slated to be launched in the summer of 2019.
As part of the state’s casino gaming expansion initiative in 2013, the Plainridge Park harness racing track in Plainville was allowed to add slot machines. A slot parlor was built at the property and opened in the summer of 2015. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission said on Tuesday that the facility generated revenue of $164.8 million in 2017, up 6% from the previous year.
