Daniel Ortlieb Leads after WPTDeepStacks Portugal Main Event Day 1A

Vilamoura is a resort located in the Algarve region in the southern part of Portugal. It is a popular tourist hot spot. And right now it is a gathering place for players who want to test their wits in the latest installment of the WPTDeepStacks series.

The WPTDeepStacks Portugal €1,100 Main Event is currently under way at Casino Vilamoura. The tournament kicked off on Thursday at the host casino with Day 1A. The first starting flight of the Main Event drew 77 entries. However, after thirteen levels of play, there were only 26 players left. They bagged for the night and will all have a day off before returning to the host venue for Day 2 of the tournament, which is scheduled to be played on Saturday, September 8.

Germany’s Daniel Ortlieb was the player to bag the largest stack last night. He collected 169,200 to secure his top stop in the temporary chip counts chart. Sergio Almeida with 158,100, Henrique Couto with 143,300, and Fabien Parisel with 141,300 were also among the players to bag the largest stacks last night and to lock a comfortable start into Day 2 of play.

Defending champ Fransisco Lopes (pictured) was, too, among the Day 1A entries. However, the player did not make it through the end of that first starting flight. He was eliminated in the last level of the night. Lopes had quite some ups and downs throughout Day 1A to have his stack dwindle and eventually fall in the hands of a fellow competitor.

What to Expect from the Tournament’s Second Day

Main Event action is set to resume today at 2 pm local time, or only minutes from now. The final two starting flights scheduled to take place within the tournament will be played today. Players who got eliminated yesterday as well as brand-new entries are expected to flock to the host casino for a chance at the prize pool and the title.

Speaking of the prize pool, the WPTDeepStacks Portugal Main Event offers €200,000 in guaranteed prize money. It is yet to be seen whether the guarantee will be crushed.

As mention earlier, there will be two starting flights to be played today. The first one, Day 1B, is set to kick off at 2 pm local time. It will feature 40-minute levels just as Day 1 did. As for Day 1C, it will provide interested players with one last chance to enter the exciting tournament currently taking place at one of the most beautiful spots in Southern Europe. The final starting flight is set to kick off at 10 pm local time and to feature 20-minute levels.

Last year’s edition of the WPTDeepStacks Portugal at Casino Vilamoura drew a field of 250 entrants who generated a prize pool of €242,500. As pointed out above, it was Francisco Lopes who emerged victorious. The player collected the amount of €57,060 for being the last man standing at the end of the tournament.
